How Learning Time Is Calculated in ELSA

Modified on Mon, 16 Mar at 12:08 PM

As organizations evaluate learning impact and ROI, clarity in reporting metrics is essential. This document provides an overview of how learning time is measured in ELSA and explains situations where minor variations may appear in reports.

The goal is to ensure consistent interpretation of engagement data across reporting views.

1. How Time Is Calculated for Standard Lessons

(Learning Paths, Practice Modules, Courses, Topics)

For standard (non-AI) lessons:

  • Time tracking begins when a lesson starts.

  • It continues until the lesson is completed and scoring is processed.

  • The recorded duration reflects the total session time from lesson start through scoring confirmation.

This structure ensures consistent time tracking across learners and devices.

2. How Time Is Calculated for AI Role-Plays and Coach Lessons

AI-based lessons use session-level tracking.

  • The session begins when the learner starts the lesson.

  • It includes completion, scoring, and time spent reviewing feedback.

  • The session ends when the learner exits the lesson.

Because of this difference in tracking logic, slight variations may appear between reporting views. In some cases:

  • Dashboard reports reflect the full session duration (until exit).

  • Mobile reporting may reflect time up to scoring completion.

If a learner remains in the lesson to review feedback after scoring, this may result in small differences between dashboard and mobile-reported time.

These differences reflect tracking methodology rather than data loss.

3. Type of Time Measured

ELSA measures session-based duration rather than active interaction time.

This means:

  • If a lesson remains open while the screen is active, session time continues to accumulate.

  • The system does not distinguish between active engagement time and idle screen time.

Session-based tracking ensures standardized reporting across all learners.
